Waterborne Diseases and the Role of Microbiology in Nepal’s Public Health

June 8, 2025

With recurring cholera and typhoid outbreaks during the monsoon season, microbiological research into waterborne diseases is a critical public health need in Nepal. Several NGOs and academic labs are working to improve water quality monitoring systems through microbial analysis.

Microbiologists are actively involved in identifying fecal contamination in major rivers like the Bagmati, as well as in groundwater sources used by rural populations. Projects such as “Water for Health” have introduced portable microbial testing kits in community schools and health centers, enabling faster diagnosis of unsafe drinking water.

This research supports not just emergency response, but also long-term planning for sanitation and water infrastructure development, ensuring microbial risks are identified and mitigated early.
