Training the Next Generation: Microbiology Education and Innovation in Nepal
Nepal’s growing network of universities and colleges offering microbiology degrees is a promising sign for the country’s scientific future. Institutions such as Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu University, and Pokhara University now offer both bachelor’s and master’s programs in microbiology.
Students are increasingly involved in field-based research, tackling real-world problems from fungal infections in hospitals to bacterial contamination in dairy products. Some go on to publish in regional journals or present findings at national and international conferences.
However, limitations remain: laboratory equipment is often outdated, research funding is minimal, and few industry collaborations exist. Strengthening microbiology education through international exchange programs and local government support could help Nepal tap into its full research potential.
